A pre-purchase inspection is an unbiased, third party examination of a vehicle prior to purchase. It literally could save you thousands of dollars and a whole lot of headaches. Here’s everything you need to know about pre-purchase inspections.

Why Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection?

The purpose of a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is to give you, the buyer, peace of mind knowing that the vehicle you are about to purchase is in good condition and free of any major defects.

A PPI is different from a test drive. A test drive only allows you to examine the car’s condition for a short period of time and on your own terms. A PPI lets you have an expert examine the car in great detail so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not to purchase it.

Additionally, a PPI can also identify any mechanical or safety issues with the vehicle so that you can have them repaired before taking ownership. This can end up saving you a lot of money in the long run.

What Does a Pre-Purchase Inspection Include?

A pre-purchase inspection generally includes a thorough examination of the car’s exterior, interior, undercarriage, and engine compartment. The inspector will also start the car and test all of its major systems, including the brakes, transmission, electrical system, and suspension.

Depending on the inspector and the package you choose, your PPI may also include additional services such as an oil change, tune-up, brake check, or tire rotation. Be sure to ask about what’s included in the inspection before scheduling it so that there are no surprises.

How Much Does a Pre-Purchase Inspection Cost?

The cost of a pre-purchase inspection varies depending on the type of vehicle being inspected and the services included in the inspection. However, most PPIs cost between $100 and $200. Given how much money a PPI can save you in the long run, we think it’s well worth the price tag.

If you’re thinking about buying a used car, we highly recommend getting a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) first. A PPI is an unbiased examination of the vehicle that can identify any major defects or mechanical issues before you purchase it. Additionally, most PPIs only cost between $100 and $200-a small price to pay for peace of mind. So if you’re in the market for a used car, be sure to get a PPI before making any decisions.
