Signs of a Faulty Exhaust System

The exhaust system draws the exhaust out of the combustion chamber and releases it out of the tailpipe after the catalytic converter has treated it. The combustion chamber cannot be filled with exhaust. If it is, this will inhibit the production of combustion in the chamber. Most people don’t think about their exhaust systems until something goes wrong. Here are signs your exhaust system needs to be serviced.

Too Much Noise

There are two reasons why your engine will make too much noise. The first reason is that you need a new muffler. There is a hole in the original muffler and it needs to be replaced. The second reason is that someone has stolen the catalytic converter out of the exhaust system.

Reduced Performance

An exhaust system that needs to be serviced can also leak or get clogged. In fact, specific exhaust system parts that can leak or get clogged include the exhaust manifold gasket and the catalytic converter, respectively. Unfortunately, in either scenario, you will end up with exhaust backing up into the combustion chamber. This will reduce your engine’s performance.

Reduced Gas Mileage

Naturally, if the engine is operating inefficiently, it will consume more fuel. As such, you will notice that you need to fill your tank more often than normal. It is important to have the exhaust system repaired in order to restore your engine’s performance. This will also restore your gas mileage.

Hot Engine Odors

We mentioned above that when the exhaust system is clogged or leaking it fills the engine with hot exhaust. This exhaust is so hot that it can overheat the engine. In addition, it can melt any parts that are susceptible to heat, such as rubber engine parts.

Gas/Diesel Fuel Odors

Unfortunately, the exhaust system can also introduce gasoline or diesel fuel motors to the inside of your automobile. If the exhaust system is leaking, the ventilation system may pick the odors up. If the exhaust system is clogged, the exhaust will back up into your passenger cabin.

Finally, bring your vehicle to our shop if it is been more than a year since you’ve had the exhaust system inspected. We will check the system for clogs and leaks as well as tailpipe damage. As we mentioned above, your automobile relies on the exhaust system to help it produce engine combustion efficiently. As such, the exhaust system needs to be maintained in order to work properly.
